Remembering Ticia, the one-eyed kitten

It has been six months since Ticia suddenly passed away. She was only one year old. I regretted that I missed few possible opportunities to save her though I know what was done is done and she is gone.

I created this short film to celebrate Ticia’s life so to shed light on how well she lived and to help me to get over with the grief I felt by loosing her.

Memes and olive harvesting

We've come to see olive oil as the greatest gift of this land. We now understand that there's something magical about the olive tree – the way it thrives with minimal attention and very little water, producing fruit year after year. And the way its tiny fruits turn into the most amazing oil.

A full woodshed

There's nothing more satisfying than a full woodshed as autumn starts to show its colours....

Bagaço (grappa)

So, with the grape juice bottled and the wine fermenting you might think that's it with the grapes. Think again, though... There's more goodness to get out of that fruit yet!

Into the Barrel

After five days fermenting and mashing in the large plastic tub, I transferred the second batch of wine to a 100-litre oak barrel. Looking and smelling great! There's something immensely satisfying about a wooden barrel...

Vindima

As the summer draws to a close, we feel the grape harvest and wine-making (vindima) coming on. We live in an area of tiny smallholdings, where almost everyone has vines enough to keep them in wine for the year. Although it's rare to see anyone out on the land checking their grapes, we know they must keep an eye on them, checking ripeness and counting forward to estimate when the harvest should take place – taking due consideration of the weather forecasts, too.

Fish

Not much to say about these... just some good food.

Generosity

Back in June, I started doing a little summer pruning of our grape vines. They are such vigorous plants that, without a little cutting back, they would block every pathway around our land and even the road that runs past! A few of the prunings fell onto the road and, before I could collect them up, our neighbour Pedro happens past.

"Do you want those?"

"What?"

"The prunings!"

"Well, no... Ummm... They are a pain to deal with. Have to be cut up for composting... Don't like to burn them, and it's too dangerous in the dry season..."

Momo Leaves Our World

July 11, 2015

She was suddenly much weaker. Yesterday, I came into the house from the garden after my siesta. The first thing I saw was Momo half sitting and half lying on the floor at the bottom of the staircase. She wanted to go up the stairs but couldn’t make it.

RIP Momo

Our great feline friend Momo, who came with us to Portugal from Tokyo, passed away yesterday. She was almost 13 years old – not especially old for a domestic cat – and we will miss her greatly.
